The spirit should have authority over the mind and the body. But I was told by my Spirit Guides that the mind resented the spirit's authority and, on occasion, would throw out impulses and desires the spirit and the body cannot control.
In the Overcoming Your Weakness Healing meditation I separate the mind, body & spirit. It enables the spirit to request the mind to stop throwing out these unhealthy desires, and then take responsibility for keeping the body healthy and alive for as long as possible.
